stop me if you've heard this already.|
here is an update.
on friday, almost a week ago now, at 7:30 a.m., after a few inevitable complications, jpw and i achieved a u-haul 26-ft truck (with a 16-ft blue sea turtle on the side) and a bunch of dunkin doughnuts and then jpw started loading books. after 2 hrs he was done with that part and andrew arrived. they kept going - jq's mike showed up - shannon woke up - and i was A Good Helper too - and mor mor -
after lunch a LOT of folks arrived and when all was said and done we had kind of a mini-salon in the late afternoon in a barren house, with a crew on the back porch drinking beer and a crew in the front room drinking champagne. there was $60 worth of pizza and a huge chunk of eileen and carla's wedding cake and i was videotaping.
eventually everyone cleared out and jpw conked out and mor mor went to bed and i sat down in bed and just cried. i went so sorrowful at abandoning the 405. i can see now why kirk always sent everyone off the enterprise but stayed aboard himself.
that night, we were all - mor mor, jpw, and i - sleeping in the hollow shell of the 405 - nothing but futons and the one old couch - and it was like being in a loudspeaker. every creak and shuffle amplified. then we imprisoned the cats in our loudspeaker bedroom, where they proceeded to SHOUT LOUDLY all night. 2 hours! of sleep! i got! so i was very otherworldly the next day -
which started at 4:30 when i gave up on sleeping. i went to go pack up all the stuff in the fridge. odds and ends. odds and ends.
we got in the vehicles; jpw edged the truck out of the drive. we left the ramp (a dismembered loft) on the stairs in case shannon wanted to skate on it later. it's just horrible, really, to remember. like a nightmare that is sad instead of scary.
but we got here to the booth, and a small crew unloaded the whole thing in 4 hours and then everyone went away and there we were - jpw, mor mor, and i - in a sea of boxes.
actually after all the unpacking, the truck would no longer function, which led after several nervewracking hours to the thing being towed away for us. ahhh, yes, it's true - it COULD have broken down along the way, necessitating a unpacking and repacking... but it didn't. it WAITED.
the next day mor mor took her leave and the unpacking began and has continued all this time.
we also had to make daily trips to various stores to buy e.g. christmas lights, additional forks spoons knives, new zealand wine, new cordless phone, and so on. it took days and days to get a phone repairer to repair the line - the wires were all messed up i guess. but now we do have the internets once again.
and so on.
mittens asked if we had sampled the nightlife and learned the lingo and stuff yet. but really it's been manual labor all day every day. today however we went to a record store and a thai place. it's like pretending, or being in a weird dream.
oh i guess the day after we arrived there was a street fair a couple blocks up the way, and we went to the initial bit of it - mor mor found a mega cool poetry store that really only sells poetry, more than i'd ever seen. she bought an armload. the bookstore people were also selling, for the street fair, ugly neckties that at $2 each functioned as raffle tickets for a later drawing. many of the citizens were seen wearing them.
jpw and i were chatted up by the local green party. they asked why we had moved here, and jpw stated i'd gotten a job at st. mary's, and i added, "i'm... well, a doctor," and the lady said, "oh, that must be weird for you."
at that time [~10 am?], we noted that a 1.8 mile running race had been announced for the street fest, so when we saw folks standing around chatting, wearing racing togs with numbers pinned to their chests, drinking beers and bloody marys in the middle of the street, we surmised that the race had already ended - but no, turned out it was due to start in another hour. i guess for a "beer run" you drink and THEN run. but i sure hate to drink and run... ba-dum-bum, tshhh!
that was pretty much our big adventure. i guess i took my folks on a driving tour of the immediate area. we haven't even been down to the sunny beaches. just boxes boxes boxes boxes and exhausted sleep with troublesome dreams.
last night eli and liz stayed over after a bruce springsteen concert. they prnouced the booth hospitable.
from now til next wednesday june 21st, i have to study up for the advanced life saving course so that when the time arrives [thurs& fri of next week], i will be able to yell "clear!" in a truly professional tone of voice.
that's all folks
p.s. we bought a new VCR. woah! we are big spenders. also - our old rabbit ears bring 5 different networks to tom edgar's television set.
